Hydrocephalus Surgery in Touba City (Senegal): 0% infection Preliminary study about 20 cases

Introduction: Infection is the most common complication encountered after ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The AIMS of this study to evaluate effectiveness antibiotic therapy with protocol in prevention post-operative infections shunt our city. Patients and methods: We retrospectively 20 hydrocephalus cases one year. They were operated through classic VP Shunt insertion technique adopted for implantation. received ten days. Results: In year we 95 patients,20 (21%) hydrocephalus. There 7 males et 13 females (ratio:0,53) . age patients ranged from 15 days 12 years average was 13,5 months. consultation time 5,6 weeks. Clinically sign anterior fontanelle tense (100%) , macrocrania (60%) ,vomiting (80%) sunset eye Brain CT-scan performed all patient,66% had Transfontanelle Ultrasonography anyone hadn’t MRI. All underwent surgical treatment. only standard minimize infection done during surgery. them ceftriaxone 100mg/kg/day five then oral relay by thiamphenicol 50mg/Kg/day follow up good no found (0%). Conclusion: Establishing an aseptic essential reduce rate postoperative infections. This result becomes better when make a combination protocol. can achieve rates zero or less than 1% case association
